Make the Most of Interior and Exterior Signage

It may seem like the majority of advertising influencing buyers right now is online, but there’s still a better way to grab someone’s attention: interior and exterior signage.
According to a Fedex Office survey from 2014, more than half of small-business store owners find that printed graphics do a better job of attracting customers than online advertising.
If you want your signs to have the highest impact, it’s important to understand your audience and their design preferences. For example, Millenials tend to value creativity, whereas baby boomers prefer simple designs. But no matter who your audience is, there are a few tips that can help you land on designs that will attract the attention of more customers.
1. Color: Use the intrinsic ability of color to draw attention when you’re designing your signage. Bold colors will draw attention and may help establish your brand. Trendy colors can be great for reaching out to a younger audience, just be aware that they may not stand the test of time.
2. Contrast: For legibility and design interest, contrast is essential. We are naturally attracted to contrast, which plays in your favor when designing any kind of signage. You can get contrast in your imagery, or by using a very light background with bold-colored text or vice versa.
3. Size: Consider the distance that you want your sign to be legible. If you want potential customers to be able to read it from 100 feet away, you’ll need large print, about 10 inches in height.
4. Font: Your font choice will lend personality to your sign, so it’s great to be creative. But you’ll also want to make sure that it’s very easy to read. In general, simple, sans-serif fonts tend to look better when printed very large.
