Grand Format Printing in Film
Wednesday, April 2, 2014
One of the
most exciting trends in the field of digital printing is grand format printing,
which offers anyone—businesses, schools, retail centers, even individuals—the
ability to create an immersive experience.
example of grand format printing's ability to create an entire world from 2D
images can be seen in last year's film, Saving Mr. Banks. In this creative
movie, Emma Thompson and Tom Hanks bring the story of how the popular
children’s book, Mary Poppins, was transformed to become the beloved 1960’s
movie starring Dick Van Dyke and Julie Andrews. And one way the creative minds
behind Saving Mr. Banks were able to recreate that time period in a realistic
way was to use grand format printing.
designer Martin T. Charles, of SagaBoy Productions was the mastermind behind this grand-format printing marvel. Martin Charles has
worked on some of the last decade's most high profile period pieces, including
Public Enemies and Catch Me If You Can. He's no stranger to historical
recreation and his work on Saving Mr. Banks is one example of the possibilities
offered by grand format printing in film.
the world of 1960s Disney (as well as Australia in 1907, as the movie features
heavy flashbacks), Charles was asked to focus on two main settings: Los Angeles
International Airport in the 1960s, and the Allora Fair, in early 20th century
Australia. Charles worked primarily from old photographs to create 185
advertisements, signs and decor elements, which were hand-drawn and then
digitized and enhanced. The final products were produced mainly using a pair of
Roland large-format printers. More than 2,000 square feet of graphics were
produced for the film, with some of the banners from the Allora Fair being as
long as thirty feet long.
